Hello.
Dalvar Theme for elgg 1.8 does not have a new_index.php It has a very different layout, where everything is on index.php
If you would like a layout like the custom index, you should familiarize with it, create a new one and edit the homepage according to your needs. Also you will have to disable Dalvar Theme.

Hi Rodolfo,
You mentioned pointing "forward" to the address of my custom homepage.
Rather than going through the process you described above, is there a homepage or custom page for logged-in users that works well with Dalvar that you would recommend?
Thanks,
Donna

I mean is there a plugin for this you would recommend?
Hi, well I removed the code for displaying the site name on the theme. I will glady post the code you need to apply in the theme
