What mod or plugin would I use for the front page. right now when someone visits my page all they see is a login screen and the page does not fit on the phone. Thanks

  Seems, you've enabled 'Restrict pages to logged-in users' option (aka 'Walled garden' mode).
  So your front page will always limited with login form. You can only change the background image there.

  You can use the bundle "Front Page Demo" plugin (or custom_index) for configuring various elements on the homepage. Alternatively you can find community plugins like the Widget Manager in which you can enable a custom index where you can freely configure a homepage layout with widgets
