Since Elgg 1.7 has been end-of-life for like 5 years I'd suggest installing Elgg 3.3 I believe this can be done through Softalicous.
And then try to upgrade your theme to match the new requirements (maybe best to start from scratch as sooo much has changed in between then and now)
