You might find this plugin helpful: https://github.com/brettp/Bulk-User-Admin (rename plugin folder to "bulk_user_admin" when installing). It allows deletion of several users at once. It has never been fully updated for Elgg 1.8 (the old version for Elgg 1.7 is the only one here on the site: https://community.elgg.org/plugins/792090/1.0/bulk-user-admin) but deletion of users should work.
On the other hand, the Spam Login Filter plugin (https://community.elgg.org/plugins/774755/1.8.5/spam-login-filter) allows reporting of spammers to the StopForumSpam site when deleting an account - if you are not yet using this plugin you should start now. Reporting spammers would require to register at the StopForumSpam site for an API key. But this might be of much use in the long run because it will block the IPs used by the spammers, i.e. they won't be able to return using the same IP (and also important: can't register on other sites neither).
You could try my plugin, it will show/detect registered spam users and you can delete them all at once.

i didn't have any challenge with using php 5.4 with elgg. (php 5.5 is more challenging for me because the method of connecting to sql is changing there).
without knowing the full details of your server i am unable to give detailed advice. i would begin by exploring the log files on the server to look for php related errors that only appear when php 5.4 is installed.
Hi!
What's your host? That shouldn't happen with elgg, you need to ask your hosting about this

What kind of programmer he is? If you are using apache add the line below in top of htaccess to change php 5.4 to php 5.3
# Activate PHP 5.3
AddType application/x-httpd-php53 .php
when you get that message you're redirected to {url}/login right? does {url} match what you had originally?
Actually it's not redirected at all. It goes to http://social.XXXXX.com/login which is the correct domain.
Could it be when the hosting company changed the DNS when they moved my account, that could be an issue?
I prefer the latter. if you know jquery you can take advantage using pop up modal with your video embedded on it..
my 2 cents.
hey thanks for the tip. I am not familiar with jquery. What is that? Is it a plugin?
Thanks!
a javascript framework bundled in elgg.. hmm, but since you are not familiar with jquery maybe plain simple html will do.. and put the embed codes like this
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/mwVuURFNX0E" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
