This could only happen if you are using an admin account or possibly have installed a rogue plugin with a badly implemented canEdit permissions check over-ride.
Have you installed anything other than the default plugins?
Hi Kevin and Jede
first of all, I'm at least happy to find out this is not "default" behavior.
I can't think of any plugin installed which can cause this, i only have pretty standard stuff enabled
I'm going to try and simply re-install Elgg 1.7 and see if this reoccurs
Appreciate the responses (i figured there was something VERY wrong somewhere)
Although members cant edit others profile, they should not see the link edit. Its better to hide the link for members. Is there any aim of letting the link visible ?
Hi Stantz,
I've done something similar for a client. However, I don't think you want to use the email address as the username. I think that you mean that you want your users to login using their email addresses rather than their usernames. That's a different thing. You will still need a username because that is used in various public places in Elgg (eg. the link to the profile page).
In one case I recoded the registration process for a client so that it asked only for the display name and then automatically generated a username from that. That worked fine because the users were using their email addresses to login and did not care much what the username was set to.
Hi Kevin that actually makes sense however what we want to do
is generate the Username from the "First Name" and "Last Name" fields, as well as the Display name
So that all a user has to do is enter their First/Last Names, email, and password
something like that would be great
