Try enabling error display in your .htaccess file:
php_value display_errors 1
Than check if some error shows up.

I have added that to the .htaccess, but doesn't throw any errors. I don't think that the browser is getting the page information from the server. Do I need to increase the timeout time or some other php config.
I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling elgg, but the problem is still persisting.
I am using Xampp 1.7.3 for Mac.
