Maybe it is time to address these sorts of issues to make the elgg to be the best again. Another issue I noticed is the naming of plugins. Currently developers can choose their own name for a plugin, and I downloaded two different plugins with the same name. If you are novice like myself, these sorts of problems really can put you off and go search for something else. As I see currently there is no system that prevents developers giving their plugins the same name. There is no "approved" plugin. Maybe there is a wisdom in that. But listing for a plugin can improve. For example plugins for version 1.7 should not be on the same page as plugins for version 1.8. Or maybe I am talking a lot of nonsense as a newbie and please correct me.
