  Install Elgg in a subdirectory, or Wordpress in a subdirectory, or both.

  Let us know what you conclude based on those discussions.
  
  Personally I'd recommend against trying to integrate them. From what I can tell it sounds like a hassle.
  
  If you're set on WordPress, you probably might as well go with buddypress for your social networking needs. Otherwise, might be easier to look into exporting your data from WordPress and into Elgg.
