I have found what I need. $messages = elgg_view('page/elements/messages', array('object' => $vars['sysmessages'])); That will retrieve the messages saved with register_error and system_message. Sorry for asking. Hope it helps... view reply

Hello, I'm trying to have error messages such as "Username already existing", "Passwords mismatch" etc. displayed to the user. First I thought ELGG didn't handle this and then I tried directy on elgg itself and could get an error message. So I know...

  If you don't see system messages, your theme must have modified the page shell. I would look there first.

  You need to create a custom page handler and add your logic there. The files in data directory do not have a URL.
  Take a look at the files plugin and see how the image icon URL are built.
