Since the site you're upgrading is on such an old version of Elgg (1.0?!?!?!?), there's going to be quite a lot to do in order to upgrade to 1.7.
I recommend you do the upgrades one version at a time. That is, first upgrade to 1.1, then to 1.2, then 1.5, then 1.6, then 1.7.
As for plugins, you need to check each one of them for a clear upgrade path. Most likely there isn't one, which means you'll have to write that upgrade path yourself. Meaning, you need to write a script that upgrades the old plugins' data models to the new plugins' data models.
You should plan on getting familiar with Elgg's internals. Upgrading from a version that old just isn't going to be a quick-and-easy process...
thanks for help i have upgraded my site with 1.6.1 and if i do some more it is giving errors so can any help me to solve this prob. one site is showing the error message but the other is not showing the any content in the site so please let me know how to solve the issue of this
