There should be no problem when using an ip as the url in siteconfiguration.
You can then redirect www.xxx.com to your ip.
There is also the possibility to fix all these renames in the .htaccess file.
The two critical Site admin particulars (site URL and Elgg data file) should be written into config.php or some othere file, where it can be corrected and brought to efffect.
I wud like to use both...
i mean if the user access www.xx.yyy -> it shud take that as ref
if ip address used it shud use that..
@Jeroen - that will work, except that no matter who accesses how, it wud go via ip addressing!!
