Sounds like a problem in the 'custom_index' plugin. As a workaround you can disable it by moving the directory /opt/lampp/htdocs/elgg1.5/mod/custom_index/ somewhere else and you should be able to get back into elgg.
As for fixing the problem in the plugin, I'm not familiar with that one, so someone else will have to help.
The error reported in the error log shouldn't be causing a white page. Is that the only error? What you can try to do is edit your .htaccess file and looking for the php directive "display_errors" and set it to 1 instead of 0. This will cause PHP to output errors to the screen...might give a bit more info...
Hi Richard and Brett,
thank you for your support.
@Richard: I renamed the directory, restarted the server and voilá no error in my error_log... but still that white page :-(
@Brett: It really seems like the custom_index plugin isn't causing the error. I followed your advice and changed the htaccess but no error is shown - just a white page.
I haven't got any more errors in my log just a few more warnings. Although I'm not sure what they mean I don't believe they cause the problem.
[Tue Sep 08 17:47:52 2009] [warn] RSA server certificate is a CA certificate (BasicConstraints: CA == TRUE !?)
[Tue Sep 08 17:47:52 2009] [warn] RSA server certificate CommonName (CN) `localhost' does NOT match server name!?
thanks again.
