That's rather strange. An upgrade like that should not increase the server load. 1.8.12 and above seems to be a little bit faster, and with the amount of people connected, doesn't seem like it would lead to suspension.
VPS can handle a whole lot more. Are you using a custom theme?
Are you hosting with Arvixe?

No I am not hosting with Arvixe. Again if i go back to 1.4.8 the site becomes faster in VPS but in case of 1.8.12 its very slow. I tried again and again. Is there any prob with database?
Hmmm It could be the database or may be a bad upgrade. It is hard to tell.

hmmmm x 2 - checked 2alexa and they say my elgg-site fkkids.com is at 1.2 million; wonder what that means considering total websites in entire world is abt 1/2 billion.
alexa is not hugely accurate.
my site was at something like 50,000 in the world about 3 years ago.. for a few months..
actually when it was on ning, before elgg..
now its at 17million, as not much has been moving through it while i configure and fix the elgg install.
Alexa rankings are based on the users who are using alexa toolbar and some other parameters. There is no need of worrying on alexa ranks. Try to improve your rankings in search engines. Most of the time the toolbar is used by web developers. So if your site has contents useful to web developers, they will visit your site and your ranks improve.
@Dhrup : dont worry now. The site rank will improve when the Kids grow up and become devs ;)
@Ura : Your ranks were higher, because you used ning service (provided u used ning's domain). Ning now has #444.
