Thanks for the response. i have made sure mod_rewrite works, and have replaced .htaccess with renamed htaccess_dist, and I am not installing in a subdirectory. But I still get a 404 error. The only thing I haven't checked in the list is httpd.conf... view reply

  @ben What hosting are you using? Try using the auto installer that comes with your hosting to install elgg.

  @ben I used that hosting before, Elgg doesn't work on free accounts. Contact their tech support, I think they have an auto installer.

  The database access details are stored in engine/settings.php. Just change the mysql password and it should work again.

  It seems to me that when there is nothing to display, I get this problem. When I post something to blog, the corresponding error is gone.

  If you are occasionally seeing this error, it means that your database server cannot handle many connections. Is it a shared server that is overloaded?

  Don't know anything about a site access plugin, but you can manually create users on the User Administration page.
