The fact that you are building an "intranet" isn't very specific. Intranets can be very different based on the needs of the users. You might want to just install Elgg and see what it offers out of the box, try out some of the popular plugins, and go from there. Spending some time thinking about ideal design of the site without worrying about a particular technology is a good idea too.
