I would say that Elgg is *reasonably* well documented, but the docs could always be improved.
Suggestions are always welcome.
@kevin and fellow members,
Do you think it would be a good idea to start a page within this group of good outside resources for those who are just getting started with Elgg(e.g. Youtube videos of installation, etc)?
There are two different sets of documentation: There's the wiki at http://docs.elgg.org and there's the developer's reference at http://reference.elgg.org.
Elgg's documentation can use a lot of work. Cash has done a great job documenting bits and pieces, Elgg is huge and the core devs (myself included) haven't been great at updating the docs. I'm working on that :)
As for the outside resources, how about putting them on the wiki? Anyone can edit it...all you have to do is register!
@Brett,
Thanks so much for your reply/input.
Pardon, when I said Rails was defacto standard I meant with regards to a framework for Ruby. I agree completely that RoR is not a defacto standard overall and will include an edit to to make this clear.
I agree with you completely that is far more important to learn good programming practices than a language/framework.
I have studied multiple languages(programming in the past and verbal languages) so I agree that learning a 2nd language becomes easier after you studied a 1st one. I may have to go through this process as I think Elgg is by far the best Open Source Social Networking Platform and has the most vibrant community. The fact that the lead engineer replied is a great indicator of that.
Also, another great indicator is that Elgg would not moderate this post out.
thank you.
@vasco
Thank you. Your post was very informative.

Ah yes this is most definitely the case. It's so much a standard that Rails and Ruby are synonymous to many people (but you and I know better ;) )
