there are many spam fighter olugins in the comminity.
First, make sure you are running the very latest version of Elgg.
Second, if you search in the plugins repo you'll find a number of anti-spam plugins.
Even though you don't have a public registration form, the registration URL is still public. If you want to disable registration, be sure to disable it in the admin interface.
In my opionion in this case a plugin that set as default new user disabled.
In a second time the admin can enable or delete the new user.
Probably changing the user registration by email can prevent this. Unfortunately I'm not so expert.
hi Cash,
running 1.7.1 -- thanks for the reply.
it doesn't really appear to be a bug, but just a different way of listing the information. The lengthy way in the first link is just a different layout i think. My php skills aren't there yet to decipher how the other layout is being accomplished... All of the files appear, and everything seems to be working right.
@Leee - It's a bug. Those two views should output using the same view type (list, in this case). It looks like the categories listing is showing in some weird semi gallery view.
Looks like it is fixed in Elgg 1.7.2
There is a plugin already for importing users by csv. I think, its the same above. you can modify it to add the profile fields too.
You can even batch upload their profile image (if any) using this plugin :
