There's "theming sandbox" in developers plugin, that shows most important elements and essentially what should be modified to override whole theme. Have a look at it.

@  Emurph, If you are going to use profile URL plugin, be careful when using str_replace(); it can take a very very long time if you use it with long replacement character or words. if you want to know what I am talking about read this http://community.elgg.org/plugins/1091233/1.1/profile-url?annoff=50

Wouldn't it be easier(maybe) just to use .htaccess and mod rewrites?
