The best way is to create an own Elgg theme ;)
Hi Nikolai,
that's not what I want and I don't understand the docu. Css is nothing I know. I need to know how can I change the color in the banner without write a new theme, that never will run :-)
Any changes you wish to make to your installation will have to go through a plugin. Because if you modify the Elgg core files directly those changes will be lost the next time you update Elgg.

If you don't feel comfortable to create your own plugin, you could always ask a developer to do it for you (for a fee). The best place to find a developer is here https://elgg.org/groups/profile/75603
We have an existing issue for this. Elgg 4.1 won't support MariaDB. If you wish to install on MariaDB you need to use Elgg 4.0 (and then update to Elgg 4.1)
We're going to 'fix' this in Elgg 4.2
