@joiwind... yes you can save the code in a php file to default/page/elements/ and then call from start.php.. 

you can edit typing mistake in language file en.php

I cannot see Friends sidebar on the site altough it is set to yes in river activity settings.

Also, In the river activity settings page, i see

Pages plugin is not activated
Profile Manager plugin is not activated

This will show when pages plugin and profile manager plugin are not activated.

if you dont have friends in the network it will not show

I have friends in the network, and when I am viewing the page source, I see it just like others.

I am very sorry for the mistake I have done in the friends widget..

You need to change the last line of views/default/pages/elements/friends.php

    echo elgg_view_module('dropdown', $title, $river_body);

to 

echo elgg_view_module($box_view, $title, $river_body);

Pages is the defaul plugin in the elgg bundle..

Profile manager is the higest recommented plugin... you can see that in plugin home page itself

For the upcoming version admin can deside where the box should appear in left or right..

Admin can choose two column or three column

three column layout can be extend to the whole site layout... (may be for default theme and others... may not work in facebook theme.. i dont know)
