  • Seems to me the best translator for elgg - a real asset to the community!

I have started translating a localy tested site that will go live pretty soon.
I was wondering what is the best way/method to transfer the core and plugin translations from local to on-line and most probably continue translating there, I would apreciate any advice.

    (plugin running fine on 1.8.3)

    p.s.
Assigning translation editors is a real lifesaver

  • Jerome,  Great plugin, we are finding it very useful for our Swedish lanauge non-profit organization site. However we are encountering something strange

The system is Release - 1.8.4, Version - 2012041801, Translation Editor 1.2.1, PHP 5.4.4-2 and a slew of additional plugins.

When a user's language is set to english, they are able to reply to messages received on the site via "Messages 1.8", however when a user is in ANY other language the reply button does nothing, has a hyperlink, submits request, but reloads the page.    HTML and javascript are the same except for the word "reply" in its variety of langauges between english and any other language.

The same problem occours on the Administration pannel, in any language other than english, we are unable to expand any of the administration menus.  Clicking the menu button reloads the page but does not expand the menu.

These are the only two places we have found this to happen, and both are core functionality pages.  (will cross post this to that group as well)

This experience is consistent across Firefox, Chrome, and Safari.

    Can you help us?

  • Hi. I use this in elgg 1.8.7 and it's work fine for all but just there exist an error there. The error is that when a group change it's icon or a user upload a photo the elgg can not find the right path of the picture. The URL to get the picture is like past but the picture is not load. Do you have any idea to fix this bug. Every things is OK when I deactivate the translation plugin. After active this plugin all picture files and group icons that upload have problem in loading. An strange thing is that the user profile icons have no problem. Thanks

  • Great plugin, works like a charm

  • in combination with a seach and replace extension in the browser this has allowed me to edit 1000+ fields very easily. thanks greatly :)

  • Excellent editor! But, in which file are the translations saved ?

  • @Nikos Maniakoudakis:

Sounds like the javascript isn't finished loading when you choose a different language then English. Best to check with Firefox/Firebug. Please check this.

Other way to test. Download the core/messages translation put them in /languages and /mod/messages/languages. Disable translation_editor, if the problem persists it's not translation_editor, but maybe the translation.

Send me a message if you need more help

  • Hi there! Plugin much more than recommended for multilanguage sites.

Don't know if this has been asked before but as a future feature I think it would be great not only to make a user translator but limit each translator to one or more languages (checkbox list?) to avoid them messing with other languages they don't know/speak.... does this make sense to somebody else here?

    Cheers

  • hi all

    Simple answer: nothing ;)

The translations for The Wire are stored in thewire.json, and all translations (of all the plugins you have translated) are merged into translation_editor_merged_1.json to save on loading time of the pages.

  • how do i test if user is translator?
is there a function to access the metadata?

  • @jsky :

how do i test if user is translator?
is there a function to access the metadata?

there is a function for this: translation_editor_is_translation_editor($user_guid). If you don't supply a user_guid the current user is used.

  • i'm seeing some text labels breaking in my site recently. steve clay suggested the php warnings i am seeing are due to improper utf8 encoding of language files (possibly).
do you have any tips on how to debug that? i'm not even sure how to identify the encoding type of a file.

  • Utf8 is pretty std std feature in code editors...

  • generally editors read and use utf8 - yet often do not make a big deal of it, so at least in the ones i'm using i've never seen it shown anywhere.

i just used the codes at: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11018967/how-can-i-be-sure-of-the-file-encoding

to assess the core.json file in the translator folder and it appears to be utf8 without errors.

  • i still haven't found how to fix the comment widget text labels on my site.
i also just downloaded a french translation from here and uploaded to my site, yet the uploaded files are not showing in the translation editor. do i need to do anything other than upload them and clear the cache?

  • Hi

    Ive installed the plugin in Elgg:Release - 1.8.14, Version - 2013030600
and when I try to use the translator i Get this error

    -------------------------------------

    Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /pps2013/translation_editor/ on this server.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Does anyone knows what is going on?

  • I found the problem. There was an installation error.
    THanks
    JOSE BROIDE

  • well, i fixed the comment label - it was simply missing somehow from the english language file.

i've uploaded 4 core files now for different languages..
and i've noticed that i am unable to add spannish or portugese via this translation editor.. those options are not appearing in the language dropdown list presently.. any idea why?
