Note: This plugin is still in alpha stage, and most likely has quite a few bugs in it .. you have been warned! ;)

Welcome to my first attempt at a plugin!
The bottom_bar plugin adds a fixed bar at the bottom of the browser with an auto updating notification and friends list.
The notification button will show red when there are new notices to be seen. When the button is clicked, the notice is cleared ready for the next update. The friends list auto updates with a list of online friends.
As of v0.2, basic chat has been added to the system, including persistant windows between page loads, chat history, sound notifications and smiley and url translation. There are now some settings for both admin and user to enable/disable chat and a few other bits.
I have tested this with Internet Explorer 7, Google Chrome 2.0 and Firefox 3.0 & 3.5, and as far as I can tell it works ok. If anyone can test against other browsers/OS I would appreciated it. Also, please let me know if you come across another plugin that this conflicts with.
Known Bugs:
- Chrome doesn't cache the sound files for some reason, so can block for a second or two when a notification sound is triggered.
- Message delivery speed is not always consistant, but that might be due to my sandbox server ;)

Bug Feedback:
When having two chat sessions going for a few minutes, the chat stopped working. When I tried to navigate to another page within the site, I received a 400 Bad Request Error. "Size of a request header field exceeds server limit." I had to clear the cache to get the site back.

Very Great Plugin :)
It works with elgg 1.6.1.
When I tested this plugin, the CPU fan accelerated obviously, and the httpd.exe take up a lot of the CPU clock. Sometimes the Apache Collapsed.
The running enviroment of my elgg based website is XAMPP 1.7.2 on Windows 7. The XAMPP is based on Apache 2.2.12, PHP 5.3.0, MySQL 5.1.37.

This is a very promising plugin and I really appreciate the hard work you have put in!
I can confirm the bug mentioned above. On our 1.6.1 install users don't receive chats. When I write something to a colleague he doesn't receive anything. In Admin section it says Elgg Objects are used (can't enable php sqlite on my host unfortunately).
Another bug we found is that the wire counter (140) doesn't work in FF. Checked in Chrome and there everything is ok.
i already install this plugin but i have one problem here, when i begin chat with the other user nothing happen.. anyone can tell me the solution for this problem..?

I love, this, it's perfect.
Just one issue I'm having. Any idea how I can stop my Flash apps on the frontpage, overlapping the bar when I scroll down. You can see what I mean on http://www.skyskratcher.com (still very much in development).

Flash does behave like that ;-( there is no z-index related rules that flash obeys. btw i do not see any problem at yr site - seems oki;;

This is a magnificent plugin. I wonder about the possibilty of some text menu items on the bottom bar consistant with the top bar. The main item I'd like is to be able to change the bottom right elgg logo into the text "The Wire" or "Wire" as I plan to use the Wire option for that area. Is it possible to make a simple code edit myself to do that? Any suggestions? Also how can I change the "Friends(#)" to "Chat(#)"? Is it just a language file edit?

You the way it is is good as people can chat one on one to there friends.
I was wondering if you could extend it a bit and have an open chat room where evryone can join and chat openly if they want. It could be placed on the bottom left of the screen next to the logo. That would be a big feature request I hope you don't mind.

Hi guys. Still in holiday mode at the moment, so work is suspended on the plugin until the new year. To all those that have provided bug reports, I appreciate the feedback and I will set about them in the coming weeks. To answer the latest couple of questions:
@Skyskratcher - as Dhrup said - not possible i'm afraid. It's one of the annoying things about flash
@Phil - The Wire is already available in this plugin. If you go to the administration settings for the plugin, you will see the "Enable ELGG menu on clicking logo?" option - one of which is to set it to "The Wire" as you wanted. All the text in the plugin is controlled by the language files. If there's not one for your language then please feel free to start one.
@wendowed - Sorry but no - as I have stated multiple times over this project, the functionality is pretty much locked down now, and a full chat room system is outside the scope of this plugin. There are plenty of plugins that provide chat room functionality already, and in a better format than could be provided by this plugin.

Thanks MP. Yeah I am using The Wire option for the elgg logo. But I wanted to drop the elgg logo for a text link saying "The Wire". At the moment I could try and make a gif with the text or perhaps a Wire icon. I could have a go at a wire icon if you like?
@Komgrit Niyomrath and the others that have reported the problem with the bad header request, I have today managed to track that bug down and hopefully squash it - the fix will be in the next release. Suffice to say that it was one that only really manifested in Internet Explorer (surprise surprise).
@Phil - Sorry, I misunderstood your requirement - Yes, the best option would be a transparent gif with the text on that you wanted, and setting the path in the admin settings, which will replace the default "logo" for you. It's not something that I will include in the plugin itself as it will always be something that is a matter of taste to each individual user, but at least the option to change it for your own image is there for those that want it.
@Terje Vullum - Can you tell me if you have tested this with different browsers to see if chat is received at all? I can't seem to recreate the bug on my server at the moment so I am looking to see if I can limit the variables a bit on this.

But we have found some Bugs ;-(
After a while the chat stopps and we get an Bad Request from the Server. this Problem can only be solved by Restart the Browser or deleting the cookies.
A strange thing, but some Messages the listener get twice.
The ELGG Objects -function doesn't work in our case.
One click on the All/Mine-link force an jump of the whole side to the top. That's unbeautiful ;-)
I think a nice feature for privacy would be a manually adjustable Checkbox for the own online-status.
Can you estimate when a new version will come out?

@BvdH - As previously stated, the "Bad Request" bug has been found and hopefully sorted, and the fix will be in the next version.
The double message is something to do with the speed of the database server, and I will be working on code to fix that. The ELGG objects is a bit strange, as they are universal. Can you confirm which version of ELGG you are using please?
The All/Mine link - not sure what you mean by "force a jump of the whole side to the top" - can you provide some screenshots please?
The on/offline status may be something I release in the beta cycle of testing - at the moment I am trying to make sure that the chat functions as it should.
As for release dates, I am hoping that now the holidays are out of the way that I will get some time to work on the plugin over the next week or so, therefore I would expect to put a new release up in the next 2-3 weeks.
