Elgg Bottom Bar v0.8 alpha

Release Notes

Note: This plugin is still in alpha stage, and most likely has quite a few bugs in it .. you have been warned! ;)

** Updated chat version - very alpha release for those interested in helping bug test **

** First release using MySQL via ELGG objects - should solve the SQLite issue **

Welcome to my first attempt at a plugin!

The bottom_bar plugin adds a fixed bar at the bottom of the browser with an auto updating notification and friends list.

The notification button will show red when there are new notices to be seen. When the button is clicked, the notice is cleared ready for the next update. The friends list auto updates with a list of online friends.

As of v0.2, basic chat has been added to the system, including persistant windows between page loads, chat history, sound notifications and smiley and url translation. There are now some settings for both admin and user to enable/disable chat and a few other bits.

I have tested this with Internet Explorer 7, Google Chrome 2.0 and Firefox 3.0 & 3.5, and as far as I can tell it works ok. If anyone can test against other browsers/OS I would appreciated it. Also, please let me know if you come across another plugin that this conflicts with.

Known Bugs:

  • Chrome doesn't cache the sound files for some reason, so can block for a second or two when a notification sound is triggered.
  • Message delivery speed is not always consistant, but that might be due to my sandbox server ;)

(yes I know the notification area is showing the same as the main page .. it was kind of the point to show the notifications were in sync ;) )

All constructive comments welcomed.

  • Doubtless, that one may need a chat plugin like the one offered here. But also the track says, little hope for update, if any,

0.7 alpha (171 days ago) 0.6 alpha (194 days ago) 0.5 alpha (203 days ago) 0.4 alpha (203 days ago) 0.3 alpha (205 days ago) 0.2 alpha (210 days ago) 0.1 alpha (216 days ago)
That is, update continued around about a month then gone dead for half a year

  • I got this working on 1.7, I had my kernel upgraded from i386 to x86_64, then it recognized SQLite and I set it to Elgg Objects and its now working. The only thing that's a little annoying is I get a couple page errors:

    Webpage error details

User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 5.1; Trident/4.0; FunWebProducts; .NAP 1.0)

    Message: Expected ']'
    Line: 1
    Char: 23
    Code: 0
    URI: http://www.liveintake.net/pg/dashboard/

Does it in IE8 too, the chat works but it would be cool to get rid of this error any ideas?

  • Amazing extension!  Everything works for me except the private chat ... I am running on ubuntu in ec2 so can install anything, i just installed sqlite3 but it says

    Database Options
SQLite extensions not installed - using ELGG Objects

Disabling and enabling the plugin again didnt change anything ... any thouhts on how I can troubleshoot?  Or just dive into the code?

  • Wow .. it's been a while. Sorry guys, I have just been manically busy with my full time job and not had much chance to sit and code for a bit. I will look at the outstanding issues when I get a bit of time. I appreciate your patience in this matter

@melvincarvalho - make sure you have installed the correct sqlite extensions, otherwise it won't work.

@democracy - Please remember the developers like myself give our time to the community freely, however we do still have our own bills to pay, so I'm afraid in my case my full time work comes first. Also, you have looked at the release dates without reading through the threads to see that

    a) this is alpha software, and still classed as pre-release so still has a lot of work required

    b) while updates may have slowed, I have still been around to answer questions when possible

Obviously there are some fundimental changes required with the release of 1.7, and hopefully things are not too broken at the moment. Please rest assured that while I may not be in a position to release a new version right away, I am still around and still commited to this plugin.

Nutter .. Brit .. that's about it! ;)
