Elgg Bottom Bar v0.1 alpha

Release Notes

Note: This plugin is still in alpha stage, and most likely has quite a few bugs in it .. you have been warned! ;)

Welcome to the first release of my first attempt at a plugin!

The bottom_bar plugin adds a fixed bar at the bottom of the browser with an auto updating notification and friends list.

The notification button will show red when there are new notices to be seen. When the button is clicked, the notice is cleared ready for the next update. The friends list auto updates with a list of online friends.

At the moment, the friends list only shows a list with a clickable link to that persons profile.

I have tested this with Internet Explorer 7, Google Chrome 2.0 and Firefox 3.0, and as far as I can tell it works ok. If anyone can test against other browsers/OS I would appreciated it. Also, please let me know if you come across another plugin that this conflicts with.

(yes I know the notification area is showing the same as the main page .. it was kind of the point to show the notifications were in sync ;) )

All constructive comments welcomed.

  • the plugin is working  fine with 1.5........

I think it will be a great feature if the notifications button turns red for personal things instead of site wide notifications. That means color change on recieving new messages in messagboard, add requests etc

  • the elggchat plugin allready uploaded here in the community has a 1 sec delay. I'm waiting hopefully for a plugin which works like gtalk, yahoomessenger etc. Thnx in advance ;-)

  • @The Mad Professor

full pop-up new window and when minimize it goes back to the bottom bar.

  • Totally understand its in test phase - it has really great potiential, thats why i'm gonna go through and test it .... @Jayadeep I think you are totally right, perhaps the sitewide activity might be an option to enable disable?? though for a smaller community it might not be a bad thing to have the sitewide activity otherwise it could be a bit empty to start with.... I havn't actually been able to get the colour change working unless I get logged out of my site with the bar still running.... i might disable all my plugins and work through which ones are conflicting with it later on... I think the river in your profile and even on the page could do with a delete option similar to what is in the message box within your profile... could be a good addition - a bit OT but i might have a quick look into this

  • @Kronis - I have been working on getting settings into the plugin today, both admin and user. I am going to stick with the river stuff for the moment while I play with some ideas I have for the chat system and sound notification, however I will look at putting options in for what kind of notifications to put in the box. The question is if they should be an admin only thing, or a per-user setting.

  • @TMP, installed and running fine. Lovely  plugin, thanks.

  • @The Mad Professor

per-user setting makes it better and open for users.

  • Really great plugin looks fantastic. Just two considerations would it be at all possible for you to provide me with a fix for IE6 so the bar is at the bottom and not at the top. Secondly have you considered integrating this with Jeroens Chat Plugin.

    Great work and thank you

  • @Clinton - Yeah, I tend to agree with you there.

@Glynn - I am looking into the chat side of things as we speak. :)

  • @mad prof. try and combine this with the elgg chat

  • Just so you don't all think that I have just dissapeared, I thought i'd post a quick update.

I am working hard on integrating a chat solution into the bar. I took a look at a couple of the solutions already out there, but decided to write my own from the ground up, as I didn't want this to be just a collection of other people's plugins munged into one.

I am hoping to put a new version of the bar up soon for people to test and bug report on, but I am not going to give a firm date to this as I want it to be as stable as possible (within the limited testing I can do) before I put it out in the wild!

Please remember that even when the next version is released, this is still very much alpha software, and should be viewed as such. It will be a while before I am happy to even move it to beta ...

Rest assured though, I am still working on it! :)
