A simple plugin that replaces the language of "friends" with that of "following" ala Twitter. It overides the "friend" strings for the elgg core, blog, bookmarks, file, friends, groups, invitefriends, izap video, notifications, riverdashboard, tidypics. Make sure the plugin is loaded after the above mentioned plugins. To change the strings, edit en.php in the languages directory.
