The plugin intercepts submitted data and convert unicodes to shortcodes like :wink: before data is submitted to the database. This removes the issue where mobile users insert emojis resulting in partly saved data, because MySQL can't handle unicode.
It also provides a handy selector for textareas - just start type a ":" and the user is presented with at dropdown - further characters will search for different emojis.
The plugin also converts shortcodes to smileys like :beers: become This is done in Javascript.
