[Elgg 1.8-1.12 & 2.X - 3.X: Event Calendar] v2.3.3

Release Notes

  • Fix: correct usage of 'ASC' constant with apostrophes in function calls instead of without as this would fail otherwise on future versions of PHP (deprecation warning).
  • Hello,

We use the Event Calendar plugin on our site, and I appreciate all the work that has gone into creating and maintaining it over the years.

I was wondering if there were any plans or discussions about improving the UI.  In particular, the UI/datepicker widget is not as easy to use (IMO) as something like this: https://elgg.org/plugins/527842 -- or any other modern calendar JS libraries (like https://fullcalendar.io).

Just thought I'd ask if something was already in the works before we investigate making our own improvements.

    Thank you!

     - Josh

  • @RvR -- thank you!  I didn't see that when searching the plugins directory, but it seems to be just what we were looking for.  I'll give it a try.

  • Ok, I got a little ahead of myself in the last post.  I tried out the CalendarUI and event_api plugins on our test-site.  It looks very promising!  Unfortunately it currently doesn't support group calendars, which is important in our case, but it does give me a good idea what this might look like in Elgg.

I'm not sure whether it makes more sense to modify Event Calendar to work with FullCalendar (or something like it), or to get CalendarUI to work with Groups.

  • I don't have time now or in the foreseeable future to make any larger changes in the Event Calendar plugin (there are some open issues in the github repo since a while I have surely not forgotten but just had no time yet to deal with). My main focus right now is to upgrade all my plugin for Elgg 3 and there are still about 25 plugin waiting to be dealt with (the larger ones...).

I have to admit I also don't fully understand what changes are suggested. What is the difference between this FullCalendar.io and setting the Event Calendar to the already available full calendar?

If you intend to modify the Event Calendar plugin OR implementing your changes in a separate plugin I could merge them maybe at a later time if possible. But as I said... only possible at a later time.

  • @iionly -- thanks for the reply.  I had missed that the 'Event listing format' setting is where we could toggle a view that already uses FullCalendar.  I just tried it out and it's pretty close to what we need.

I found a few bugs -- I'll take a look at the existing open issues and see if they've already been discovered.  If not then I'll see if one of my developers can patch some of those and put in a pull request.

It sounds like you're swamped with 3.0 plugin upgrades.  Thank you for working on that!
