we are trying ^_^ enjoy it is a really good plugin no need for vps and dedicated servers just to use a chat plugin and i am sure that it makes a big difference for many people : )

What about security/privacy? How trustworthy is the third party server which handles the chat data (text) and how long is the data retained? Also in what country (countries) is (are) the chat server(s) located?

check the scroll back website http://scrollback.io/  if you are looking for a more customisable chat plugin for elgg you would have to use a chat plugin that requires you to host it, scroll back have a github page you can download the full software and host it yourself etc or do both host with them etc

In 2014, we're planning a whole new Scrollback experience; check out a preview of the new look. It's still a little rough around the edges, but we'd love your thoughts on the direction we're taking. We're also planning to launch a premium tier around February. As our way of saying thank you for being an early adopter, all the premium features will be free for the ELGG community through next year. You don't need to do anything – if you have claimed your room* by 31st January, it will be upgraded automatically.

Quite a few people messaging me about this plugin all info is on the scroll back site please go there for more information, and no scroll back is not a paid app at this time and when they do make it paid all elgg users using it before febuary can have the premium version for 1 year with there elgg site, exclusive to elgg users only! @mariano, The chat is release under AGPL, but i release this plugin under GPL V2.

basically just dont remove the scroll back link and logo, you can email admins at scrollback with the info above they say they are truely open source so if you want to make big changes i am sure they will be ok with it as long as you talk to them 1st, please report back here your reply if you contact them mariano
