i attempted to replace the dropdown on the river page with this plugin.. the dropdown renders ok and i can skin it with css.. however, when i choose an option with the dropdown, the river does not update.. 
any idea what i might be missing?

the example you gave has title fields set.. and the river selector doesn't.. other than that, i see no differences between the example(s) and the river selector in elgg.. hmn
