I don't think rss changes for a new version as a new page is created. You can look for a plugin called elgg_update_services by RayJ. That used to do it, though I think I read it's not working anymore...
@Matt, @Ben: sorry, I've just slipped over the installation requirement note line saying "Requires the full version of Event Calendar - found on Kevin Jardines github account, the 'full' branch". Mistake corrected, iCal operations now work seamlessly. Thanks! I threw my two cents into the top hat of recommendations :-)
