I think there's an issue between the elgg token input and elgg jquery. It won't search for users and files when composing a message.
Works for me:
Are you sure you have the right version of tokeninput?
Works fine on 1.10. it's a shame it doesnt let you choose a new file to send rather than choosing an older previously uploaded file... But great job. Recommended :)
Doesn't work for me in a clean install of elgg 1.12
I'm using this token input:

Actually, it wont search for files previously uploaded....
