which one is right mod location?
I am trying to download a new plug in into mod directory. I see two 'mod' folders in home directory under 'public html' and 'www'. Could some one help?

To answer your questions, it's a server specific setting. You need to know which one is the document root for your server, and you need to install Elgg and its modules under that directory.
