I am not sure which ones are compatible with Elgg. someone was referring to Ohyes

You should never have to flush cache or upgrade after enabling a plugin.
But @Brett will it take effect automatially? becuase i never tried it!
when you said download the file, will it require the file upload first and then download?
Enabling and reordering plugins flush the cache. The only reason to run upgrade after enabling a plugin is if the plugin has upgrades to run.
Download OhYesChat and then upload it to the mod folder of your elgg installation. OhYesChat is good and light on servers, so give it a try.

I downloaded the app in my desktop and seeing several files under the OHYES folder, not sure which one of the file needs to be uploaded in the elgg installation. Is it Start.php or all the ones listed?
I downloaded, and uploaded the chat app in the elegg install but after activating the plugin. I deleted the plugin.
i got the following error message and the site would n't run after activating the plugin:
ohyes (guid: 75394) cannot start and has been deactivated. Reason: Cannot include start.php for plugin ohyes (guid: 75394) at /home/pbhandari3/public_html/mod/ohyes.
That error means that either the start.php is missing, is in the wrong location (maybe in ohyes/ohyes/start.php?), or has permissions that make it unreadable.
Check the location first, usually it's due to people unzipping to the wrong directory
may be I didn't upload properly. could you highlight some steps pls?

lol you have uploaded it wrongly, it must be upoaded 'mod/OhYesChat/start.php'
