i've been reading through the offers and reviews and chat at www.lowendbox.com
and clearly there are many hosting offers (vps with root access) available that are waaayyy better value than the commonly used/known ones.
i have seen several that offer 2 or 4 times the RAM & CPU + SSD storage and just generally more of everything than my current host does.. and for less money!
my current host is not so great presently, so any recommendations are welcome.
ideally i would like a host that is not USA or UK based due to the excessively disgusting invasions of privacy enacted there.
any tips welcomed and sharings of experience with elgg on great hosts warmly appreciated.

Maybe that's because everybody is moving over to cloudboxes.
WIth a cloudbox you can start little and add more power when you see you need more resources.

the deleted comment was just a link to an elgg profile for a webhost.. which is of zero use for this thread.
this thread is intended to provide real feedback, ideally with verifiable performance data about servers that we could use.
if a web host service is a truly great one then to provide the stats should be simple to do. i am not commenting on the host that was posted as being good/bad - i do not have any data on them to be able to say.
otherwise this thread is for users of elgg to comment on hosts / packages in relation to elgg, not for hosts to advertise their servers.

i advise to get familiar with lowendbox.com - where you can find many reviews and offers which are much better than the versions that are advertised more publicly.
I just set up an elgg site at http://haitiblues.com/ and it seems to be working fine. I am targeting musicians but anybody is welcome to set up an account and try it out. The hosting site is http://arvixe.com/ and the installation was painless. It can be done for $7./month, which I think is quite reasonable. So far, so good!
