I am having an issue with Elgg. I would love to link to other sites in the navigation bar I.E rottentomatoes.com, but I can't. Elgg always defaults the beginning URL to where elgg is installed. I am not sure if this is a problem with custom index or a problem with elgg. Any ideas?

what's your code?
Elgg normalizes urls, so if it doesn't start with http: it will get prefixed with the site url.
my links always start with http: or www. I am just trying to add a link to the menu where activity, discussion, groups, plugins, and themes are on this site. The only difference is that this link goes to a non-elgg area of my Website. I am trying to link to a sub-folder which isn't Elgg and am having trouble doing so.
www doesn't count
Matt, from what I've read only way to make an ElggMenuItem go to another site is to make a plugin that links to that site... that's illogical. There has to be an easier way to add a link than that way. I have the links on my site already, I just want them to be with the ElggMenuItems like the wire, photos, etc.
Never mind, I did it through the admin > appearance > menu items.

doesn't go to google?
