The user's avatar represents a user (or a group) throughout the site. Wherever you see a user's avatar you can perform actions on the user using the context-sensitive menu included in the avatar. For example, you can add him as a friend, send him an internal message, and more. There are plugins that can add fields to this context menu, so its full content will vary depending on the functionalities active in the current Elgg site.
