One thing I was really hoping for on a new version was for the 'Plugin projects' filter in the river to not just include new plugins but also to include new releases on existing plugins, as I find it hard to keep up with upgrades to existing plugins - is there any chance of this?

Dear friends, there is a plugin to notify about new releases. Just give a look in my profile or look for "elgg update services". Works like a charm.
+1 for Ray J - it's a fantastic plugin
+1 from me too.. But what happens is those who release new versions of their plugin, they often forget to update the manifest.xml file. :)
The filter problem of new release not showing here at the community site has been started quite some time ago already. I had opened a ticket at trac about it: http://trac.elgg.org/ticket/2755
Okay I think that Trac issue is correct - can it be reopened? If there is some reason why you still can't have both sub-types in the same list, perhaps just another river filter for updated plugins - at the moment they don't show using any of the filters there.
Um... why is this plugin not a part of core? That looks amazing. Ray J, you should seriously push to get it included. I imagine anything we accept in core would drop the email notification and have better integration with the admin UI.
Dear Evan, the plugin was made with Cash´s Help. I submited a patch to ELGG Webservices too. Since the release we do have plans to make it a core plugin.
I will make some code refactoring and submit to core, ok?

@Ray: you might also want to take a look at start.php of the Elgg 1.8 version of the update service plugin to fix the deprecated issues. They produce quite a lot warning entries in the server log.
@Nick: the trac ticket has been reopened quite some time ago already. But it seems it had simply been forgotten ever since.
