I'm having the same problem. I followed that tutorial and got a white screen when I tried overloading. I followed the instructions and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. The admin page told me it was a problem with the start.php but I'm not sure how to fix it. Can someone please point me in the right direction?
: ( I'm desperate
Try the white page troubleshooter @ http://docs.elgg.org/wiki/White_page . Or share your code somewhere.
Guys...there is a plugin in the plugin repo by Matt Becket which is a blank plugin with css overridden so that you can use it for building a theme.
search plugin repo for 'skeleton' and you'll find it.
Edit the views/default/plugin_name/css.php file in that download, upload to your site via FTP or whatever, go to admin and hit 'upgrade' and then 'flush caches' and then take a look at your site.
