Why such poor photo gallery support?
I have tried Community Builder in Joomla, Buddypress and WP Symosium in Wordpress, Drupal and now Elgg looking for a basic social networking platform with good photo gallery support. So far I have come up with no viable solution. Either the galleries are too klunky for the average user or there are technical issues such as distorted thumbnails, album rights issues or display issues (no lightbox-type support).
It seems to me that easily sharing and displaying photos is a key element to any social networking site. So why are so many so bad at it? there are dozens of great photo gallery plugins for core CMS tools like Joomla, Wordpress, Drupal, etc. but none for social networking.
FYI I just installed elgg 1.8.3 with the tidypics plugin but the plugin is riddled with errors.
if anyone has any other ideas I'd really appreciated your feedback!

Can you link to some of the photo gallery plugins you consider to be the best for other platforms?

Tidypics team are doing great, this plugin is nice but need to improve little bit like, flash uploader, little bit layout style for light and dark themes, and need to register some fuctions for cutom index, like recent albums, popular albums, related galleries like msn, lightbox support with link to post comments.
Finally if possible to add some ajax when browsing photos....

I really like NextGEN gallery for Wordpress and either JoomGallery or Phoca Gallery for Joomla. But alas, none play well with existing Social Networking add-ons (Buddypress, Community Bulder, etc.)
'NextGen' looks like a really neat novel new presentation style ! ;-) Pitty it is tied down to WP and not free standing. I might have a closer look to decide if it can be re-packaged for Elgg - if it's features look like its' worth it.
Has there been a timeframe established for the release of the new Tidypics? Just curious because I'm holding off on implementing any type of photo gallery for this release. Just want to be able to give the boss a WAG as to when the feature will be available in 1.8.x (and, hence, our site).

@Burgs, thanks for suggesting hypeGallery. To be fair, it's not usable at the moment. I am completely reworking the UI now, so if you have any suggestions, let me know. I am going for a Flickr look, with G+ menu UI
