When I try and install the index.php file downloads and nothing else happens

I am trying to install Elgg on a subdomain with this format:

http://elgg.domain.com

I created the subdomain and uploaded the files. When I go to the domain nothing happens other than the index.php file downloads.

Help!

This is a problem with your web server. It's not configured for PHP.
