Avatar Upload not working properly

Just downloaded the 1.8 version tonight and installed on my server. When trying to upload my Avatar, it acts like it is uploading and is successful, but there is no image to crop. The site says I uploaded an avatar as well.
I have GD library installed and running on the server which is also running Apache.
What's the trick to getting this fixed?

Can you find the image file in the relevant folder within your data folder? Is your data folder set to 777?
