first activate twiter widget and than you will be able to activate twitter API

sorted, it was the OAUTH API I needed to active, thanks again. Now I will make a FULL back up :)

Honestly, the community around Elgg is pretty amazing.  I know we can occasionally get annoyed when someone posts questions that have been answered a couple of hundred times already and didn't bother to try the search, but really, when help is needed, someone is always ready and willing.

Can you post details of how you fixed this please.  I have a similar problem.  I upgraded 1.8.1 to 1.8.2 and upgarded the profile_manager plugin.  Now I get 

profile_manager (guid: 45) cannot start and has been deactivated. Reason: Cannot include start.php for plugin profile_manager (guid: 45) at /var/www/members.fairfax.org.uk/html/mod/profile_manager.

irrespective of whether plugin is enabled or disabled.  The permissions are set right too.
