Why elgg comunity site is too slow ?

I am on 100 MBPS connection and still elgg is very slow. What is the reason behind that, what the hardware configurations and internet bandwidth speed elgg using?
Community site is not hosting any videos and any pictures only lots of text. then what is the reason behind the slowness of elgg comunity site?

Yeah, it was extremely slow yesterday. May be is being targeted by spammers?
@rjcalifornia thanks for the suggestinons My site is running very fast. I am talking about this site elgg.org which is very slow to browse everytime.
Elgg.Org Community has been quite very fast 85-90% of the time and slow only 10-15% of the time from here. ;-)
We're constantly being hit by spammers. Bots will also sometimes be too aggressive and cause a slowdown.
True, sometimes a little slow, perhaps many visits to collapse the server, I sometimes I have so many people connected that make fall my server hehe
Undoubtadly its the visitors - I have the same problem with over 140 'visits' an hour from bots, image hotlinkers and kiddy scripters. It tends to slow things down for the regular visitors!
Now elgg's alexa rank is around 9000 which means lots of daily visits. According to me it means arround 15000 daily hits. I think elgg need more powerfull server and more bandwidth now to handle that much load. I am in us and always found slow browsing.......May after 1.8 target done, core team will take a look into this right now all are busy with 1.8 task.
community.elgg.org site is very fast today, is there anything changed in configuration or harware? it is responding very fast now....
Try turning off some modules that you recently installed.
