Hi,
I'm new to elgg but I was thinking of using it for a new project. 1.8 looks nice as is, but obviously 1.7 is much better supported in terms of plugins. I'd be interested in any advice on whether I should use 1.8 or 1.7? I'm not afraid of coding, and I'm inclined towards 1.8... but i'm not sure how mature it's status is? (the outstanding bugs don't seem critical).
THanks in advance,
R

You must log in to post replies. If you know coding, whats there to worry? Go for 1.8. Its not hard to covert 1.7 plugins to 1.8.
According to the roadmap:
http://trac.elgg.org/roadmap
Elgg 1.8.0 final is due out in 3 weeks.
So it seems the one to go with if the plugins you need are available.
thanks guys. the plugins for 1.8 are limited but i think sufficient for my needs.
I was wondering if there was any major performance issues, but I saw the other post about a successful transition of a live site from 1.7 to 1.8. So I think that answers my concern about whether there's any significant functional issues under the hood that i was not aware of it.
PS: I noticed that 1.8.0 is official due out in 3 weeks but with no activity on the nightly builds i was not sure if i could trust that.

3 weeks 1.8 out? uhmm I think elgg team need more time ... I hope they are taking a vacation after a long year :)
1.8.0 should be out as scheduled. The nightly builds appear to be broken still after a server migration, so I'll take care of that. I had thought I fixed them, but apparently not.
thanks Brett
I'd recommend going for 1.8 .. a lot more mature and nice to use. We are moving our sites to 1.8, so we can launch quickly when 1.8.0 is released
