I tried the age and gender plugin and it gave me the same result as many have found..... the white screen of death.
I thought as an alternative I could simply change the profile fields regarding conact phone numbers to age and gender fields.
This poses my question... will this conflict with variables in the DB and destroy my site? I have members and do not want to lose everything. Is it possible just to display these new profile titles without changing any paths and variables in question?
Some help on this one would be great as I am not ready to make a mistake that cannot be un-done.
Thanks!

why not use the change profile link on the left of the admin pages. I think it's part of the core ad not a plugin. Are you using 1.5
yes I am using 1.5 and I think you are referring to this
"Replace profile fields"
which I have no idea exactly what this does? I used it once and am not sure if maybe I was using it wrong? To be honest I'm not sure what it does? lol
OK
If you go in there, it will replace all your profile fields
If you want to keep the ones you have. make new ones with the exact same name
make sure you get the order in the way you want as you will not be able to change it other than starting over
for example
Profile field "name" ---------Text
Profile field "Interests" ------ Long text
Profile field "age" ---------- text
Profile field "Gender" -------- text
Profile field "Your Website" --- URL
Profile field "email address" ---email address
Text, URL, Email, gives an input box to members of approx 40 characters
Long text brings up the editor where you can insert a lot more depending on what version of the the editor you are using
If you you don't have a live site, experiment, you can always start again, or turn it off all together Then it will default to the original fields.
Hope this helps
and will this delete all info from my current users? I only have 50 users or so, but I do not want to annoy them be deleting their data. Can I name the fields that I want to keep the same as some of the existing fields so that the data is not replaced with blanks?
Thanks again for the info thus far/
The simple answer is yes
and remember you can return to the default at any time to bring back the original fields and data if you mess it up and your original should be there.
If you want to add fields but also keep the same ones, you will have to re put in the original fields. Make sure you name them exactly the same. Do a test first with just your first field to see how it works. If you are comfortable with it then go ahead. When I did it I opened phpmyadmin and copied and pasted the names of the fields to make sure I got the names the same.
This is how I did it
Anyone else have a better or easier solution or more informed info on this please contribute as I beleive I did this some time ago.
ok, I will try this out. Just one more question though....
When in the replace fields page in my admin there is one input area for replacing fields? So do I input each new filed separately or use a comma space?
one at a time
thanks for the info, much appreciated!
Is there any plan in the next release to add the dropdown combo, radio selection and min/max range fields?
No, but you could always use my form plugin for that.
