I can not install elgg, after it tells me that the database was successfully installed, It takes me to the system settings screen I fill it out, click save and get a 404 error....
The original path was this http://mysiteimmakingblachahs.net/action/systemsettings/install
the folder within elgg was 'actions' not 'action' like above. So, I renamed the folder and then I am still getting the same error.
I created all the pages, and the htaccess.
everything was smooth untill this point. Can you please help me ?

If i do not have the ht access set up right can someone edit one for me and send it to me ? I mean I think I am but it's just not working.
@cody:
Are you sure that you entered the site URL, path to root directory and path to data directory correctly? In case you entered something wrong it's already written in the database and if you don't start the installation process with an empty database in later tries you will always get the same error even if you might entered something different for site URL and paths.
If mod_rewrite is correctly configured you also don't need to rename the actions folder. It works then.
Do you install in a subdirectory in your domain, for example http://domain.name/elgg/? Then you would need to adjust RewriteBase in .htaccess. Otherwise I don't think your problem is caused by a wrong .htaccess.
If you would install on a local server I would have suggested to add the lines
<Directory "/path/to/your/root/directory">
AllowOverride All
</Directory>
to your Apache's http.conf as this could solve the error you have. But as you are installing on a webserver, your hoster should have configured Apache already correctly.
@iionly
I will review the .htacces again, thanks so much for your time
Just had a brain storm about this whole elgg thing and what my new question is, is this, does the .htaccess file need to be in the elgg folder where the domain is pointing or does that matter ?
On the system settings and etc screen, make sure that you are entering your
e.g.
with the trailing slashes. You've may have forgotten those trailing slashes.
I have done all of this, I am beginning to this this can't happen for me...
Have you dropped your complete DB and tried a new install?
If your hosting provider is not helping you, leave them and find someone else.
Well heres something new...

@webgalli
cain't just drop hosting providor..
-> same hosting that supports fbfkids.com ! ;-)
cody has so far had some of the best advice given for these problems
which are the usual newbie, non-techie's issues.
he must be doing something wrong which is quite elementary,
wich he just does not see due to lack of elgg experience..
which would most probably take you (for example)
a few minutes to fix and get the install done right... ;-P
