I can not install elgg, after it tells me that the database was successfully installed, It takes me to the system settings screen I fill it out, click save and get a 404 error....
The original path was this http://mysiteimmakingblachahs.net/action/systemsettings/install
the folder within elgg was 'actions' not 'action' like above. So, I renamed the folder and then I am still getting the same error.
I created all the pages, and the htaccess.
everything was smooth untill this point. Can you please help me ?

what hosting are you using? Check with your hosting if they have mod_rewrite enabled.

mod_rewrite
isn't installed.Check your
httpd.conf
to make sure that this module is being loaded by Apache. You may have to restart Apache to get it to pick up any changes in configuration. You can also use PHP info to check to see if the module is being loaded.I agree that this is my problem, I will contact my host. If this isn't the problem then I dont know I have followed all the steps multiple times.
thanks by the way.
Well I can't make the people at 1and1 understand my last post the keep telling me to use the
RewriteEngine On
Which i already have done. How can I override them if they don't understand what I am referring to ?
did you make a .htaccess file?
yes i used the one that is in the install, renamed it, and tryed both options.
Did you talk with them about this problem? If it is on, it is not working properly.
Make sure your host meets all the requirements for installing elgg.

small teeny weeny plug for 1&1 - they're my host too for FBFKids.Com ;-) no complaints from me here ;-X
"..folder within elgg was 'actions' not 'action' like above. So, I renamed the folder..." DO NOT rename this folder - leave as /actions"
"404" is a "404" - URL/Page Not Found - most likely ReWrite issue or permissions, ownership somewhere perhaps..
? Are you on 1&1 Shared, VPS or Dedicated
