Strange X appearing on site

Hi,
I noticed that everytime I navigate to any page, a letter X appears on the top left side of the screen, right below the horizontal menu bar at the top.
When I click on it, it disappears but everytime I go to a new page, it is there again.
How might I rid myself of this strange X? Thanks!

Are you using any third party modules? If yes, disable them and check the site again. Also disable all plugins and enable them one by one. If that too is not fixing the problem, do upload files of a brand new elgg over your existing files.
are you sure you aren't missing a picture?
Sounds like a status message without the proper css...does it go away by itself after a few minutes. Either way, it sounds like a bad plugin/theme.
