Import Users and profile fields

I'm working on an installation for a customer who has a list of already established members and they want me to set up profiles for each of them, all 280. Their list of info is in an excel file and i could easily get it into a comma delimited file, or whatever format is needed... however, i have found no plugin or method for importing contacts or members from such a file.
Any advice/ideas? I appreciate any response(s).

you can add custom profile fields using Jeroen's custom profile plugin and it even emails the user with their own password... works a treat on 1.7.1 and earlier. It is wise to split the list up though... say 50 at a time... The only problem is that the emails get treated as junk by outlook.
There is a plugin already for importing users by csv. I think, its the same above. you can modify it to add the profile fields too.
