Thinking about using Elgg to Create a Site but need help with deciding factors

Hello

I do not know if it will actually do or look like I want it to though. I have looked at some of the themes available and so far I have not really come across one like what I have pictured in my mind. I am also not a coder and do not know of any at the moment that would have the time to help me if I come across a problem. I understand that Elgg is easy to use and I am hoping that it is as easy as it sounds. I have worked with SMF forums before, but this is completely different and I wish to make it a fairly large site.

The closest site I know of that does what, except a slightly different group of members is http://www.reverbnation.com  could someone look at that site and tell me is Elgg can be set-up this way?

Thanks

  • With Elgg, nothing is impossible!

If you have any idea, draw it up on MS Office or Photoshop. I love doing Elgg templates. If you're interested, PM me (can be done in a reasonable price, depending on your design ☺) .

  • Hi

    I will contact you..

and I have no idea what happend to my post. Why does it look like that?

  • Kunti, you can certainly use Elgg to make the site like the one you placed the link for. The only variable is time of development. If you want to work on your site yourself, Elgg has quite active community and people should help you with your problems. If you want someone to code the site for you, there are a few developers in the community who can do this for you as well - including myself.

  • How much time are we talking? I am a student, I would like to get it up and running before I head back to school. I keep looking for themes/templates that might help, but so far only came across a couple there were added here 1+ years ago.

How much coding could it actually take? I have known some to take a year and never end up completely finished.. not elgg though. I just found out about this style this past while.

  • KuntiSurya You could also consider using Joomla. Less development time. Anyways, here is our elgg site: www.milocker.com

And also our Joomla Testing site www.milocker.com/basics

If you want, you can contact us here =)

  • Kunti Surya:Elgg out of box installation will provide you many things but setting up a  site like http://www.reverbnation.com in elgg is not possible in one day. If you know php & html and you are willing to spent some time with elgg framework, wikis and community, you can develop your own site with elgg and with any level of modification or you can either hire many professional coders from here in the community for your work.

As said by rjc considering joomla or drupal are also alternatives for your.

It all depends on the complexity of your design, how much time it is going to take.

Developing of course is limitless as I said before. The thing is - Elgg has tremendous possibilities. So, if I own an Elgg site, I will always keep improving it, it will never be 'finished'.

  • @KuntiSuryaIf you want a beautiful site with as many pages as you like, hundreds of free themes and powerful plugins, and social networking without any coding at all, try WordPress and use the BuddyPress or Mingle plugins. If you're using Windows you can set up a local version for speedy testing with Xampp.

You need free stuff, and quickly by the sound of it. Elgg is great, though there are things which need doing in code which are already done in other systems. Message me if you need some quick help in setting things up. It's really very easy.
